Should You Start Ozempic or Mounjaro Just for Your Vacation?
"I'm flying to Japan in 10 days. Can I just take one shot to avoid gaining weight on the trip?" I hear this request weekly in my Phuket clinic, often from patients flying out the next morning. As a doctor, I have to tell you: this is a medically bad idea.

The Scenario: "I Don't Want to Get Fat in Japan"
You have booked a 10-day trip to a food paradise — Japan, Italy, or a cruise ship. You know you will be surrounded by buffets and desserts, and you are terrified of gaining 5 kg.
So, you have a "genius" idea: Why not take one shot of Ozempic or Mounjaro right before I fly? That way, I won't overeat.
Stop right there. As a doctor board-certified in preventive medicine, I hear this request weekly in my Phuket clinic, often from patients flying out the next morning. And as a doctor, I have to tell you: this is a medically bad idea. Here is why using GLP-1s as a "temporary shield" often backfires.
Reason 1: The "Vacation Ruiner" Effect
These medications are not like Paracetamol. You don't just take them and feel better. They require a titration period (weeks of slow adjustment) because they fundamentally change how your stomach works.
- The risk: If you inject your first-ever dose 2 days before your flight, your body is not used to it.
- The result: Instead of enjoying sushi in Tokyo or pasta in Rome, you could spend your entire expensive vacation nauseous, vomiting, or stuck in the hotel bathroom.
- Fact: Nausea is most common in the first week of treatment. 1 Is that really when you want to be traveling?
Reason 2: The "Lag Time" (It's Not Instant)
GLP-1s are not "on-demand" appetite suppressants. They are slow-acting biological agents.
- How it works: It takes about 4–5 weeks for the drug to reach a steady level in your blood.
- The reality: The starting dose (0.25 mg Wegovy or 2.5 mg Mounjaro) is a "baby dose." It is too weak to stop you from binge-eating at a buffet, but strong enough to give you side effects. You get the nausea without the benefits.
Reason 3: The Dangerous "Rebound Hunger"
Let's say you survive the trip and take the shot for 2 weeks. Then you fly home and stop.
- What happens: The drug leaves your system, and your body panics. It releases a surge of ghrelin (the hunger hormone) to make up for the lost calories.
- The aftermath: You will likely experience extreme hunger when you return, often leading to rapid weight regain that cancels out any "control" you had during the trip.
Reason 4: "Holiday Pancreatitis" (The Alcohol Risk)
Vacations often involve two things that don't mix well with GLP-1s: heavy alcohol and high-fat meals.
- The danger: GLP-1s put mild stress on the pancreas. Alcohol also stresses the pancreas.
- The cocktail: Combining a new GLP-1 injection with a week of wine and wagyu beef increases the risk of acute pancreatitis or severe gastric distress (bloating/indigestion).
What Should You Do Instead?
If you want to control your weight during a 7–10 day trip without risking your health:
- Use high-fiber supplements: Take glucomannan (konjac) capsules 30 minutes before heavy meals. They expand in your stomach to create fullness physically, not chemically.
- The "protein first" rule: Eat the meat or fish on your plate before you touch the rice or bread. This triggers your body's natural satiety hormones.
- Walk it off: You are on vacation! Use those 10,000 steps walking around the city to offset the extra calories.
Exceptions: When IS It Okay?
If you are ALREADY on GLP-1:
Do not stop. Continue your weekly injection to maintain your blood levels.
Travel tip: Do not increase your dose right before the trip. Stay on the dose you are used to.
If you are NOT on GLP-1:
Do not start. The risk of ruining your holiday with vomiting is simply too high.
The Verdict
Treat Ozempic and Mounjaro like a marriage, not a one-night stand. They are meant for long-term metabolic commitment, not a quick weekend fling.
